I am a 55-year-old white man who grew up in the deep South. I can tell you without equivocation that white-on-black racism is still out there.
However... I suspect that the young woman's reaction was probably as much to your gender as to your skin color. I've also had offers of assistance rejected with dark suspicion. The mediasphere teaches us that every man's a masher.
